Al-Shubaily Tower
The building form is created to accommodate the unique site characteristics and program requirements, drawing upon a modern interpretation of a traditional souk.
Location
SHAC competition entry sought to provide a high-tech building that incorporates both contemporary and Islamic influences. In the souk-like division of the ground floor spatial arrangement, the design strives to emulate familiar patterns of Arabic and Saudi culture and society. Furthermore, through the utilisation of the principle of the wind tower, evaporative cooling concepts, Islamic pattern screening, shading, indirect lighting and breezeways, the design integrates methods of passive climate control necessary to this region.
The innovative design of the building is distinctly modern with Islamic and Saudi overtones. It efficiently integrates all necessary functional requirements and provides a flexible mix of spaces and luxury apartments within an iconic shell.
